AHMEDABAD:

Central Government's decision of putting on hold the development of SEZ's due to acquisition of farmland for SEZs has put the brakes on Ahmedabad apparel park project.

Centre's decision to stop notify new SEZs came when 40 textile firms and apparel makers were on the verge of being handed letter for land allotment.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi has written to Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath to expedite the process of issuing the final notification.

Apparel park is scheduled to come on 38 hectare land owned by erstwhile Ambika Mills Ltd promising employment to several people left jobless following closure of these textile mills, informed Modi.

The project had to face legal battle over land in Gujarat high court and then it was getting notifications from finance as well as environment and forest ministry of Centre, which further delayed the project.

Later a small stretch of road under jurisdiction of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) near this park caused delay.

An investment of Rs100 crore may have been incurred by each unit and non-issuance of notification would block investment of nearly Rs4,000 crore, a senior GIDC official said.

The project has 44 plots between 1,000 and 3,000 sq mt size and big textile players like Arvind, Chiripal and others have already booked plots in the apparel park.
