As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, the consumer price index for Germany rose 1.6% in January 2007 on January 2006. Compared with December 2006, the index was down 0.2%. In December 2006, the year on year percentage change was +1.4%. The estimate for January 2007 based on the results from six Länder was thus confirmed.

The 0.2 percentage point rise in the rate of price increase from December 2006 (+1.4%) to January 2007 (+1.6%) was only partly due to the tax increases (value-added and insurance taxes) which came into effect on 1 January 2007.

The tax rises had nearly no visible effects on the total result for the reference month of January 2007.

The prices of clothing and footwear declined on the previous month due to the close seasonal change-over from the winter to the spring collection. On average, the prices were down 1.8% (including footwear: –2.4% and clothing: –1.9%).

The harmonised consumer price index for Germany, which is calculated for European purposes, rose 1.8% in January 2007 on January 2006. Compared with the previous month, the index was down 0.2%. The estimate of 30 January 2007 was thus confirmed.
