Silk garment register remarkable rise in exports

Indian readymade silk garments are witnessing steady export growth while traditional silk carpets are struggling for survival in overseas markets.

The UK and UAE, two major countries have exceptionally increased procurement of silk from India recently.

Export of Indian silk products are classified under four categories-readymade garments, silk carpets, silk waste and natural silk yarn, fabrics.

In the face of export target of Rs3,200 crore for silk goods including readymades, carpets and wastes set by Ministry of Textiles during current fiscal, the country achieved export of 51percent worth Rs1,669 crore, according to statistics available with Central Silk Board,

Readymade garment segment achieved witnessed a year-on-year growth of 21percent with exports of Rs620 crore during April-September 2006, up from Rs511 crore a year ago.

Of the total export earnings of the country, the UK accounted for 28.1 percent US 11 percent, Italy 6.1 percent, UAE 5.7 percent and Germany 5.4 percent emerging as five top countries importing Indian silk goods during first half.

Import of silk by UK from India during the period jumped to a whopping 22 percent to Rs183 crore from Rs150 crore a year ago.

Indian exports to UAE surged by 28 percent to Rs95 crore from Rs74 crore.

Exports of silk waste during the period doubled to 864 tons from 341 tons, fetching Rs10.39 crore, up from Rs5.96 crore a year ago.
