Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia releases the consumer price index (CPI) for January 2007. Compared to December 2006, the average level of consumer prices in January 2007 rose by 1.3%. Prices for goods increased by 1.0% and prices for services went up by 2.4%.
The fall in the prices of wearing apparel, footwear and natural gas had the greatest impact on consumer price changes in January.
Due to the reduced rate of value added tax, supply of natural gas became cheaper.
Due to the seasonal sales, there were decreases in the prices of wearing apparel and footwear.
In comparison with January last year, consumer prices rose by 7.1% (6.4% for goods and 9.3% for services).
