Desert Embroidery is one of several initiatives developed by a NIF grantee which works to advance the status of Bedouin women.

With transition from a nomadic way of life to a fixed dwelling place and from an agrarian to an urban economy, the Bedouin woman has lost her ability to contribute to her own and her family's livelihood.

Desert Embroidery, located in Bedouin village of Laqiya in the Negev, is founded by Naama Al-Sana.

Standard of living in the region dropped as husband was also unemployed in considerable number of families.

The embroidery is done on handbags, pouches, pillow covers, wall hangings, bookmarks, greeting cards, and other products by the women working in the centre.

Earlier, about 165 women use to come every week for embroidery assignment and now, they only visit every other week.

Lack of capital is major concern for the center and they are not able expand their activities.
