Southern African Customs Union (SACU) has inked a deal with Tanzania which allows the latter to export textiles and apparels duty-free to South African nations. Country obtained a five year export license to SACU member states following prolonged discussions.
According to Minister for Planning, Economy and Empowerment Juma Ngasongwa, deal enables Southern African Development Community (SADC) exporters to achieve capacity for double transformation regime as per SADC Trade Protocol.
Through double transformation, fabrics and clothing produced in the country will get preferential market access in line with regional trade conditions. Tanzania must possess the required production capacity for access.
Ngasongwa added that SACU and Tanzanian Government have made plans to execute the deal. A six month interim agreement allowing the country to export local textiles to SACU member nations had expired in January 2007.
