Speaking at a press conference on February 26, 2007, India's Minister for Commerce Kamal Nath informed that India wants to raise imports from Nepal. He is visiting the country to attend South Asia Free Trade Area Agreement (SAFTA) Ministerial Council meeting.
India is mulling over slash of four percent additional duty on readymade garments produced in Nepal. Previously, it had cancelled four percent additional levies on 11 categories of imported products from the country.
Kamal Nath added that India would take every step required to reduce the huge trade deficit between Kathmandu and New Delhi.
There was 50 percent upturn in India's imports from the country since 1996. Bilateral trade between both nations is expected to improve due to Nepal-India Trade treaty.
SAFTA ministerial council has decided that both countries will conduct bilateral talks to solve disputes, so that SAFTA can be implemented effectively.
