Clothing accessories & wearing apparel fall at retail outlets in Jan

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released the latest figures on retail sales (March 1).

The value of total retail sales in January 2007, provisionally estimated at $20.9 billion, decreased by 1.3% compared with a year earlier. After netting out the effect of price changes over the same period, the volume of total retail sales decreased by 4.8% in January 2007 compared with a year earlier.

It should be noted, however, that as the timing of the Lunar New Year fell on February 18 this year but on January 29 last year, the above year-on-year comparison might have been affected to a certain extent.

The revised estimate of the value of total retail sales in December 2006, at $21.5 billion, increased by 11.6% over December 2005, while the volume of total retail sales increased by 8.2%.

Value index of retail outlets of clothing, footwear and allied products for the month December 2006 was 146.0. Value index of retail outlets of clothing, footwear and allied products for the month January 2007 was 133.6. Value of retail sales for retail outlets of clothing, footwear and allied products for the month December 2006 was $HK million 3275.

Value of retail sales for retail outlets of clothing, footwear and allied products for the month January 2007 was $HK million 2997. Year-on-year % change of value of retail sales for retail outlets of clothing, footwear and allied products for the month December 2006 was +13.1%.

Year-on-year % change of value of retail sales for retail outlets of clothing, footwear and allied products for the month January 2007 was -2.8%. Value index of retail outlets of wearing apparel for the month December 2006 was 145.4. Value index of retail outlets of wearing apparel for the month January 2007 was 128.8. Value of retail sales for retail outlets of wearing apparel for the month December 2006 was $HK million 2798.
