Apparel firms 'cry' as Port Mombasa custom clearances get delayed

Apparel manufacture face delayed reciept of raw materials, particularly Chinese fabrics and yarns, due to delayed customs clearances of consignments at Mombasa port.

Implementation of a new electronic customs clearance system Simba 2005 at airport and port in Mombasa has been the reaso for this dealy.

The port reportedly used to clear 200 containers per day, prior to the implementation of the news electronic clearance system installed by a specialised team from Senegal.

Speaking about the dire situation faced by the apparel and textiles industry, the General Manager of Upan Wasana Apparel based in Nairobi explained that Kenya could not afford such ddelays where thousands of import-export consignments pass the port.
Facing cut throat competition in the global markets, Kenyan apparel producers have been facing the Chinese onslaught after the quotas on the latter were removed.

It is said that apparel firms may incur losses by way of either orders getting cancelled due to delays, or by sending consignments by air to ensure timely execution of orders after working overtime to meet the deadlines.
