SME clusters report to be tabled soon

KOLKATA:
Reports on 20 small and medium industries clusters in West Bengal would be submitted soon by the agency set up by Centre, GD Gautama, Secretary, state Cottage and Small Scale Industry Department, said Thursday.

The central government provided Rs3 lakh for the study being prepared by the agency and work is likely to start once the report is placed, said Gautama while delivering his address at seminar on cluster development organised by Federation of Small & Medium Industries (FOSMI) here.

West Bengal has 41 clusters, of which 21 are dedicated to the khadi and handloom sector presently with another 91clusters to be asset up in different industry segments, said Gautama.

Around 380 such clusters generate an income of Rs1.6 lakh crore in the country with some 40,000 small and medium enterprises conducting their businesses in these clusters.

Some big clusters located at Ludhiana in Punjab, Tirupur in Tamil Nadu and Surat in Gujarat serve the woolen, hosiery and textiles industries, respectively.
