According to the State Statistics Bureau, China's cotton production reached 6.73 million tons in 2006, increased 1.03 million tons or up 17.8 percent from 2005, an all-time high.

Yarn output was 17.4 million tons in 2006, an increase of 20 percent over the previous year, both set record highs.

It is expected that textile production will continue to maintain a steady growth in 2007 and demand for cotton this year is estimated at 11 million tons. The gap between supply and demand is still quite great.

Nearly 90 percent of cotton has been acquired and put into state storage. The purchase price has been stable. Cotton sales continue to enlarge, and sales price climbs higher firmly.

After the Spring Festival, spring sowing preparations are undergoing around the country. According to a recent China Cotton Association survey, national cotton acreage will increase by 3.6 percent in 2007.

Although the purchase price of cotton this year has dropped from the previous year, rising yield has been an offset to price loss. The comparative economic benefit of cotton planting is till considerable, so cotton growers have more confidence in cotton planting this year.
