Prices curb cotton production

As per the cotton production estimates, crop has reached 59,043 from 58,553 metric tons over last year, a minor increase of 490 metric tons.

Government believes that cotton production in the country is mainly affected by low price in the market.

In past few years, cotton has emerged as major foreign exchange earner due to depression faced by tobacco.

Till now, exact figure of farmers who have dropped cultivation of cotton is still unknown.

Last year, Government had fixed minimum cotton price at MWK30 per kilogram.

If sources are to be believed, cotton was sold at around MWK27 per kilogram in the just ended cotton marketing season.

At present, Government is trying to convince members of the Southern Africa Customs Union (Sacu) to eliminate rule of origin as industry is not able to produce enough cotton required for production of textile products to be exported to Sacu members.

Country also failed to exploit African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) due to lack of cotton production.
