CCEA nod for compulsory jute bag packing of food grains & sugar by Govt agencies

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has planned to ensure 100 percent packaging of food grain and sugar in jute bags this year.
Welcoming this decision, the jute industry feels it will help uphold confidence among jute growers from the eastern region, who anticipate massive production of more than 10 million bales this year.
The previous government had proposed compulsory use in packing commodities, Act of 1987 and had formed a Standing Advisory Committee (SAC) to suggest packaging customs on year-on-year basis.
Despite strong opposition from different quarters including some government departments, the CCEA had decided 100 percent use in packaging of food grains and sugar.
According to the order issued by the Textile Ministry, the decision was taken after considering the commitment fixed in the National Common Minimum Programme of the UPA government, the National Jute Policy 2005, and the commitments given to Parliament regarding protection of jute growers and industry workers.
