Analysis made by a committee appointed by Agriculture Minister Kim Chance revealed that genetically modified cotton (GM cotton) crops can raise agricultural output in north of Western Australia. Hence the State Government could once again face pressure to remove its ban on such crops.
As per a draft report, if the GM cotton sector becomes financially stable then it could create over 120 direct jobs and 100 temporary ones through 9000 hectares of crops. Commercial sowing of GM cotton can be done in Queensland and NSW.
This report has come after a one month delay, causing fear that Ord Stage 2 project and other expansion plans on the river Ord would be affected by it.
Some advantages of GM cotton crop are that it is good for rotation and it also gives good yield as proved by trials in last few years, according to Kim Chance.
Report only gives information to the Government, it does not recommend any type of policy. GM cotton is vital for development of Ord Stage 2 project.
