The centre specified that it would not support the big dyeing and bleaching units in Tirupur, Tamilnadu, which has been closed on the High Court's orders. However it assured to assist small units under existing schemes.
In Lok Sabha session, Union textile minister, Shankersinh Vaghela stated that the units, which have been forced to shut, are large enough to bear the cost of installation of effluent treatment plants.
K Subbarayan, Member of Parliament (MP) tried to draw the attention of the Textile Minister to the problems resulted due to the closure of over 600 dyeing and bleaching units located in and around Tirupur.
These units used to employ 2.5 lakh people with average of 417 employees per company.
Under the Technology Up-gradation Fund Scheme of the Textile Ministry, five per cent interest subsidy could be provided for installation of effluent treatment plants, said textile minister.
Vaghela added that the Environment and Forests Ministry also provides loans at concession rates to industrial units for controlling pollution.
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion has announced to grant Rs 50 crore for installing pollution control measures for different units at Tirupur, opined Vaghela.
