During 2006, Spain's shoe imports from China and other Asian countries surged 100 percent from 2005. Spain imported 295 million pairs of shoes worth Euro1.6 billion from the country.
Spain exported shoes worth Euro1.7 billion last year. But all shoes for export were of high quality, whereas those imported were of middle and lower grades. Hence the Spanish market of middle and low quality shoes was dominated by China and Vietnam.
Because of this, most Spanish footwear enterprises have abandoned production and marketing of low-grade shoes. They are concentrating only on the high quality and middle grade ones at present.
