The project is expected to get three-way investments from domestic leather companies, direct investments by major international players and joint ventures.
The complex would get special economic zone (SEZ) status and benefits. "Since no developed countries do the primary processing of hides and skins, India with its advanced scientific and technological knowledge developed by institutions like CLRI can create world-class, environment-friendly tanneries that could be a model for other tannery clusters in the country and across the globe," CLRI sources said.
"With the imported hides and skins, India can be the most sought-after global hub for semi-finished and finished leather," they added.
