A BRIEF NOTE ON GEA DELEGATION MEETING WITH THE JT. SECRETAY TEXTILES ON 9TH MARCH, 2007____________________________________

A small GEA delegation consisting of Mr.Vasdev Loond, President, GEA and Mr.Surinder Anand, Executive Secretary, GEA had called on Shri Quaiser Shamim, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles on 9th March, 2007 to discuss GEA suggestions and recommendations to boost textiles and garment exports.

While conveying thanks to the Ministry of Textiles for providing benefits to the garments exporters by accepting GEA recommendations regarding withdrawal of Textile Committee Cess, Extension of TUF with enhanced allocation of funds and reduction of Excise Duty on Man Made Fibre and yarns, GEA delegation requested the Jt.Secretary for grant of additional fiscal and commercial relief including higher duty drawback rates by increasing the coverage for determination of rates so as to ensure full reimbursement of all Excise Duties, Customs Duties and Local Taxes etc.

The Jt.Secretary also agreed with the GEA suggestion for suitably revision in Labour Laws to promote competitiveness of Indian Garment Exports.

The Jt.Secretary further pointed out that his Ministry was fully apprised of the problems being faced by the garments exporters because of high transaction cost and the Textile Ministry in collaboration with Ministry of Commerce is taking steps to reduce the transaction cost of exporters to enable them to face stiff competition from China and other countries.

He further said that most of the GEA points were discussed in depth with representatives of trade and industry at the Board of Trade meeting held on 8th March, 2007 in the Ministry of Commerce.

He assured the GEA delegation that all their suggestions and recommendations would be favourably looked into and necessary actions will be taken, wherever possible, by the Ministry of Textiles.
