Textile exports show mixed performance

21
Mar '07
According to latest statistics, textile exports saw growth of six percent during the first eight months (July-February) of the current financial year compared to similar period of the last year.

Goods worth $7.006 billion were exported in the current year, an increase compared with $6.609 billion worth of textile products exported in the same period previous year.

In February 2007, export of textile products depicted a growth of 6.27 percent to $788 million as against $742 million in February 2006. It has also shown growth by 3.19 percent compared with earlier month January, when $764 million worth of textile products were exported.

The exports in January 2007 had seen a major fall of 22 percent against December 2006. The textile export of the country is under severe pressure ever since the quota regime ended on January 2005.

The high cost of Pakistan textile products is unable to compete in the international market because its regional competitors India, China and Bangladesh are selling these at lower rates.

Various items in textile category showed mixed performance with some posting growth and few falling down.

Figures suggests that the export of raw cotton declined by 17.88 percent in July-February of 2006-07 against the previous month of this year. The export of cotton cloth decreased by 9.10 percent during this period in comparison to last year.

The export of bed spreads continued to show negative growth and was further down by 5.29 percent in the first eight months.

Knitwear export posted a growth of 16.10 in this period. The export of readymade garments also increased by 7.59 percent. The export of towel grew by 2.02 percent.

The export of made-up articles increased by 2.52 percent and cotton carded declined by 56 percent.

The cotton yarn posted a growth of 3.07 percent in the said period and art, silk and synthetic textile exports were up by 164 percent and other textile materials were up by 24.26 percent.
