Booming cotton yarn exports worries Govt

Rising cotton yarn exports is a matter of concern in the current textile scenario that is deteriorating rapidly.

Yarn, which in fact is elongated fibre, is used to weave fabrics and is also considered part raw material. This fetches low foreign exchange in comparison to finished fabric or readymade garments that come under high value-added form of yarn.

In the first eight months of current fiscal year, cotton yarn export grew 154 percent and textile segment saw only modest 6 percent growth.

Hence, this is not very promising rise in the face of local value-added sector. The Government is trying to prop up other sources like womens fashion garments to capture world textile and apparel markets.

With the expiry of quota system, China and India have emerged as chief exporters of textile and garments and by 2010, these two countries are likely to capture 50 and 25 percent share respectively of world markets.

Where does Pakistan stand is all this, is the mute question?
