Hand knitting yarn production up in Japan

An end of 2006 boost in Japan's domestic production of worsted yarn led to a strong annual result compared with a year earlier. It is the first time in 12 years that worsted yarn production exceeded the year earlier level in Japan.
Weaving yarn accounted for the largest share of the yarn produced domestically, and worsted machine-knitting yarn production also grew substantially. Hand knitting yarn production also grew.
In December 2006 imports of worsted yarn to Japan also jumped year-on-year, the strength of the increase a sharp contrast to the contraction in 2005.
Looking at the demand side, exports of worsted yarn in 2006 remained moderately below the year earlier level, with domestic demand rising significantly. This strong domestic demand for women's wear fabrics and jersey fabrics was led by Bishu district, the centre of Japanese wool textile production.
Domestic production of woollen yarn, on the other hand, continued its declining trend in 2006 despite a Q4 2006 improvement in the supply and demand of woollen yarn in Japan.
