Textiles created from early decades of 20th century to modern day by Maya people of Guatemala and southern Mexico were presented at National Museum of Mexican Art.
The exhibition 'Arte Textil Maya', started from March 19, showcases skirts, ceremonial headbands and poncho like women's blouses called 'huipiles' Multiuse cloths, called 'tzutes'. The items were created by Mayan women and woven with primitive back strap looms.
The process of creating these colourful fabrics needs a lot of hard work. These anonymous women spun cotton, wool and rabbit fur into yarn, dyed and wove it into complex patterns. Then they embellish these fabrics with embroidery, brocade and applique.
Cesareo Moreno, visual arts director of the Mexican Fine Arts Museum briefed the media that this exhibition provides an opportunity to link the modern era with ancient civilization.
