The ethnic wear sari is loved for its elegance and style statement. Most Indian women choose this beautiful attire for simple reasons: it's practical, adaptable. Woman has developed a special relationship with saris.

An exhibition 'The Art of the Sari' is organized at the Surrey Art Gallery opens to popularize sari in Canada. The fair will continue till June 10.

From different regions of India, saris of cotton, silk, Banarasi, Pochampalli, shimmering Kanjeevaram, multi-coloured Bandhani, which illustrate unique handicraft techniques are on display.

The exhibit features contemporary and antique saris that demonstrate history of 5,000-years of this piece of clothing originated in the Indian subcontinent.

Designer Satya Paul is showcasing some hand painted saris at Surrey exhibition. Paul has been creating original, high-end saris for quite some years.

Another attraction of the event is the original Air India red patterned sari from 1960s. This has significance because it marks the introduction of sari to western world by an airline.

Khadi sari in white with a blue stripe, a style worn by Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta is also present in the exhibition.

One more appeal to this fair is a Kashmiri sari with a mass of delicate embroidery so dense in parts that the gorgeous silk material cannot be seen underneath.

Sari is gradually capturing the hearts of westerners. Celebrities like Goldie Hawn, Naomi Campbell and Oprah Winfrey, have worn saris and recently, Elizabeth Hurley wore an $8,000 sari at her wedding.
