The foundation stone laying ceremony of Assam Gas Cracker project, scheduled for April 7, has been postponed, indefinitely.
This step was taken, probably, because the only half of the land required for the project has been acquired.
This complex, promoted by state-run GAIL, is expected to cover around 1400 acres at Lepetkata in Dibrugarh district.
Sources say that officials took this measure to avoid any controversy likely to arise and assured that once the deals are finalized and approved Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may announce a new date for the ceremony.
Once the pre-construction financial agreements are concluded, the project is to be completed in 60 months.
The facility has been designed with a production capacity of 220,000 tons per annum of Ethylene and 60,000 tons per annum of propylene with natural gas and naphtha as feed stock.
The products from the petrochemical complex shall be 220,000 tons of HDPE/LLDPE, 60,000 tons of Polypropylene, 55,000 tons of Raw Pyrolysis Gasoline and 12,500 tons of fuel oil every year.
