TEI expected to invest Rs20,000cr during next five years

Apr '07
“The Textile Engineering Industry is determined to obtain a lion's share of this investment,” said Rajnikant Bachkaniwala, Chairman, Textile Machinery Manufacturers' Association of India.

The present estimated capacity of the Indian Textile Engineering Industry (TEI) is Rs.3,800 crore. The TEI had a production of around Rs.2,212 crore which was an increase of 31% over the previous years production of Rs.1685 crores. In 2006-07, the production is likely to grow to the extent of 35% to reach above Rs.3,000 crore. The investment of Rs.20,000 crore is expected during the next five years.

Spinning machinery is the core part of TEI. There is sufficient capacity in Weaving Preparatory machinery i.e. Winding, Warping and Sizing machinery which are of international standard. Development of high speed sophisticated shuttleless looms is at nascent stage in the country. In Processing Sector, entire range of processing machinery of very high quality is manufactured in the country.

However, some specific items of machinery in processing and finishing stages are yet to be developed due to its limited demand and very high cost. On an average, the country was importing textile machinery and accessories above Rs.2,500 crore during 2002-2003 to 2004-2005 which has increased up to Rs.7,000 crore in 2005-2006 due to surge in demand mainly in the spinning machinery and to some extent in the weaving & processing machinery. The import may remain at this level for next couple of years.
