Statistics of Mozambique Cotton Institute (IAM) shows that production of raw cotton has reached 122,282 tons in 2005-06 campaign where as in 2004-05, the yield was only 78,683 tons.
According to IAM, reason for this growth in cotton production is that more and more peasant families are involving themselves in cotton production and have grown 576 kilos per hectare.
Around 20,931 tons of cotton fibre has been sold, earning US $25.86 million in last campaign.
During 2006-07 campaign, the authorities are predicting slight decline, about 121,000 tons of raw cotton production. This is due to late rains in some cotton growing areas and marketing problems.
Some cotton growers of Nampula and Cabo Delgado provinces, peasants are also threatening to stop producing cotton until the marketing problems are solved.
