Real thing or Chinese silk?

Benarasi saree is one of the most priced and exquisite creations of Indian silk and is world-renowned.
However, around 50-60 percent of the silk for saree-weaving comes from China. Sources say that Chinese silk is preferred for its lower price range and ample availability.
While Indian cocoon silk costs roughly Rs1,600-1,800 per kg, that from China is only Rs1400.
This trend is fading the value and importance of high-end Ramanagaram silk from Bangalore, ranged at Rs1925 per kg.
Insiders report that most of the Chinese silk is imported illegally through Kolkata and is sold below market price.
Several weavers though believe that Chinese product is used mainly for handlooms and not for high-end celebrated Banarasi saris.
Experts say that it is possible that to save production cost, weavers blend in both and pass it as pure silk saree.
