Quality concerns of cotton imports from US

Following the surge in cotton imports, the quality problems of US cotton imported last year was especially striking, causing economic damages to many domestic textile enterprises.

Experts remind spinning enterprises to be alert when importing US cotton. They should adopt corresponding measures such as contract provisions of the International Sale of Goods, supply options, post-entry testing and inspection at production site in the companies.

Last year, Jiangsu's cotton imports were mainly from the US. Total imports were 1,138 lots of 135,347,4 bales, and 306,600 tons, valued at US $410.46 million, accounting for 50.9 percent of the cotton imports in the province, and 18.58 percent of all the cotton imports from US by China. Among the 1516 lots under quality counterclaims, US cotton imports formed 1008 lots.

The average (grade) downgrade rate of US cotton imports was 12.4 percent, 4.13 percent higher than the overall downgrading rate. Among the 34 importers, the proportion of cotton downgrading rate of US cotton imports was greater.

The downgrading rate of some imports was as high as 100 percent, with downgrading rates ranging from 4.5 to 0.5 levels. The average failure rate of US cotton length was 4.9 percent, with a top up to 100 percent. The average failure rate of fiber fineness was 16.5 percent, with the highest up to 100 percent. The average failure rate of fiber strength was 8.8 percent, with the highest up to 100 percent.

In terms of weight, the problem of weight was also more serious. 88.8 percent of US cotton imports were short in weight. The average short-weight rate was 1.28 percent, with the maximum rate up to 17.07 percent, higher than the general short-weight rate.
