Dr Duvvuri Subbarao as Secretary of Economic Affairs

Dr. Duvvuri Subbarao joined as Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, this afternoon. He belongs to the 1972 batch of the IAS (AP cadre) and topped the Civil Services Exam 1972.
Prior to this assignment, he was working as Secretary to the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council. He has been appointed against the vacancy arising out of retirement of Finance Secretary, Shri Ashok Jha, IAS (AP.69).
Dr. Subbarao has wide experience on issues in public finance and has held important posts in this area for the last 18 years.
He has worked as Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs during 1988-1993 when economic reforms were initiated.
He also served as Finance Secretary of Government of Andhra Pradesh 1993-98 and was actively involved in initiating fiscal reforms at the state level.
He was lead Economist in the World Bank during 1999-2004 and worked on issues of public finance in countries of Africa and East Asia.
While in the World Bank, he task managed a flagship study on decentralization across major countries of East Asia(China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and Cambodia).
Dr. Subbarao studied at IIT Kanpur and was one of the first IIT products to join the civil services.
Subsequent to joining the IAS, he did his MS in Economics from Ohio State University (1978) and was a Humphrey Fellow at MIT during 1982-83. He has a Ph. D in Economics from Andhra University.
