Import caps on a number of textile products from China, by the US and the Europe Union hardly mattered as the country put up strong performance on the cotton textile exports front in January-March 2007.
According to the latest data released by China Textile Industry Association Statistics Center, cotton and cotton textile exports amounted to US $1.973 billion, a 4.81 percent rise in the first quarter this year.
Exports of general trade reached $1.238 billion, a 2.13 percent climb over previous figure. Processing exports of imported material (by enterprise) earned $671 million, an increase of 8.42 percent. Processing exports of supplied material (by overseas buyer) rose to $45 million, a growth of 17.13 percent.
General trade is still the main mode of China's cotton textile exports that accounted for 63 percent of the total exports. In recent years, rapid expansion in cotton textile output has forced enterprises to enlarge their exports portfolio.
With the realignment of cotton textile industrial structure, adoption of advanced technology and its application, export competitiveness bar has been raised higher. As a result processing exports in general trade has shot up considerably.
Meanwhile, China's cotton textile imports continued to decline. Statistics reveal that during January-March 2007, cotton textile imports slipped to $1.675 billion, down 32.78 percent compared to corresponding period, last year.
Regarding trade mode, the import value of general trade substantially reduced to only $243 million, 72.62 percent drop! Imported material processing reached $725 million, a 24.2 percent retreat. Supplied material processing earned $303 million, representing a fall of just 0.96 percent.
