Uganda provides safe business environment for Indian investors

Uganda is the hub of business to meet the demand in East Africa and the country provides a convenient and appropriate business environment said the minister. He emphasised on the requirement of development of energy sector in Uganda and invited Indian companies to invest and set up hydro-electric power plants in the country.

CII will host three Regional Conclaves in countries of Africa in June and July 2007. A delegation of Indian companies, will participate in the Regional Conclaves and select cities of the African countries will be treated as hubs for Regional Conclaves. Kampala in Uganda will be the hub for 12 countries in East and North-East Africa.

Mr. Fred Beyenddeza, Acting High Commissioner, Uganda High Commission in India said that bi-lateral relation between India and Uganda must be steady and focus towards growth for the benefit of both the countries.

He said that stronger ties with India is on Uganda's priority list and CII can further strengthen the relationship through the forthcoming conclave in Kampala, Uganda in June.

Uganda is the recipient of Commonwealth Business Fund and the ambassador urged the Indian business community to participate in the development of trade & business in Uganda and encouraged CII to spearhead the process of utilisation of the available funds in Uganda.

The business scenario in Uganda has been very positive in last 20 years with a stable government that is focused towards growth of the country said Mr. Sanjay Tanna, Member of Parliament, Uganda. He mentioned that the judiciary system of Uganda is very effective and the Government has set up a special commercial court to deal with trade and industry cases.

Talking on the issue of visa, Mr. Tanna said the Indians can get visa on arrival and the country has open trade policy with no restriction on investors.

CII has identified Uganda as the hub for the business in Eastern and North East Africa and the Conclave at Uganda in June will reiterate the fact, said Ambassador V B Soni, Chairman, Overseas Infrastructure Alliance Pvt Ltd. The Conclave will focus on creating a long-term friendship and explore the business opportunities for Indian Industry in Uganda added Mr. Soni.

Indian Association in Uganda has been associated with Ugandan government to promote Indian business in Uganda and represent 17,000 people of Indian origin in the country, said Mr. Sanjiv Patel, Representative of Indian Association in Uganda.

Mentioning the focused sectors for investment in Uganda, he said that Uganda seeks investment and business association in energy, tourism, films, infrastructure, information technology, financial institutes, education and agricultural sector. Mr. Patel also emphasized that pharmaceutical sector has a huge potential in Uganda and companies in India should look at the opportunity from long-term perspective.
