Coir exports up 19% in 2006-07

India, one of the top producers and exporters of coir in international market has set new records in export with an increase of 19 percent at Rs605.17 crore in 2006-07, compared to Rs508.44 crore in the previous fiscal year.

AC Jose, Chairman of Coir Board told reporters, while attending a press conference on May 14 that India exported coir products worth 1.69 lakh tons compared to 1.36 lakh tons in 2005-06, shows a growth of 24 percent.

According to Jose, though dollar fluctuations affected coir exports in last two fiscal years, Board has outdone the targets set by Ministry of Textiles. The number of countries importing Indian coir products too increased to 97 from 90.

As far as export market is concerned, statistics revealed that US is the largest market for coirs accounting for more than 37 percent of total export, EU countries imports more than 41 percent and remaining share is distributed among Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium.

Export of rubberised coir items has shown an upward trend, from 537 tons it is increased to 947 tons in the last fiscal. Value wise increase is also evident from Rs377.05 lakh to Rs697.86 lakh.

However exports of coir rugs and carpets have declined by 65 percent in quantity and 59 percent in value.

Chairman of Coir Board disclosed that Government has sanctioned Rs22.50 crore for upgradation of looms to increase productivity.
