Mr. Mohammed Dewji pointed out that besides the textile unit, its group company 21st Century Holding Limited (TCHL) is involved in export of value added sisal products to Japan, south Korea, Taiwan, India, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Yemen and other countries.

The unit, which is 100% export oriented, was also modernized to produce high quality natural and dyed fine yarns. Recently the company was awarded the Export Processing Zone status. Mr. Dewji said that the company which originally used to produce Agricultural twines, which is a dwindling market, moved into production of high value sisal fine yarns after the modernization which involved installation of new state of the art spinning and dyeing machines.

According to Mr. Dewji, the strategy of METL group, which is the largest producer of sisal fibres in Tanzania, was to position itself as the best quality producer of sisal yarns in the international market, and to later expand its product base to polishing cloths and sisal carpets.

Vice President Dr. Ali Mohammed Shein, who was the Chief Guest at the award giving ceremony, in his speech said that Tanzania industrialists should build competitiveness and penetrate into foreign markets for their survival and in the wake of rapid globalization and increased regional economic integration. Dr. Shein expressed concern over poor performance of the country's industrial sector, saying its contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) had for many years stagnated at eight per cent and its share of exports was discouragingly low at around 10 per cent.

“This means our country is a traditional economy that does not export industrial products or value added items,” he said, and called for a radical shift from the trend.

In response to the speech, Mr. Dewji remarked that his group, which had already initiated the shift towards export of processed value added items in textiles, sisal products and cashewnuts, would enhance its efforts and add further processed products to the list of its exports.
