International symposium at EMO Hannover 2007 to hightlight chances and risks of a growth market. The event takes place on 17 September 2007 from 09:30 to 18:00 h at the Convention Center, Hall 1A, at the Hanover Exhibition Center.

Exports of German machine tools to the newly industrialised countries (NICs) have risen over the past five years by an average of 14 per cent. Behind this mere figure, Eastern European customers are responsible for an above-average increase in export rates.

Goods delivered to Russia rose last year by 57 per cent, those to Slovakia by 51 per cent and to Romania by 40 per cent, figures which more than justify paying especially close attention to Eastern Europe, a region which is no longer merely attractive as a location for production, but also as a profitable sales and procurement market. For Western European machine tool manufacturers in particular, this market on their own doorstep is of crucial interest.

A decisive factor in the success of any overseas commitment is an intensive knowledge of the market. Above all in Central and Eastern Europe this aspect is especially significant, since the general conditions vary enormously between the individual markets being targeted.

Machine tool manufacturers wishing to successfully set up or expand their business activities in Eastern Europe must take into account the fact that there is a huge diversity not only of economic situations and specific market conditions, but also of business customs and practices and of cultural requirements.

What form can and should successful market entry strategies and sales opportunities take in Central and Eastern Europe? Questions such as these will be informatively dealt with by an international economic symposium at EMO Hannover 2007.

The German Machine Tool Builders' Association (VDW) and the economic journal "Produktion" are joint sponsors of this symposium featuring experienced representatives from within the branch.
