Apart from the employment potential the large number of skilled and unskilled activities makes the sector doubly important in meeting important objectives like inclusive growth. Thus the employment potential of the textile industry is of major significance both for increasing the availability of textiles for meeting demand from the buoyant domestic and international markets and for also meeting broader social objectives of growth.

Merchandize exports and employment:
There are very few studies which have tried to estimate the employment generation from export trade. The most recent and reliable study is that done by the Research and Information Systems for the Non Aligned and other Developing Countries (RIS) for the Ministry of Commerce in 2006.

Though exploratory in nature, the study estimates the total direct employment created by exports in 2004-05 as 90.06 lakh while the indirect employment was as high as 69.66 lakh which put the total employment generation from exports at 159.72 lakh.

However, the increase in employment generated by exports has varied sharply with the trends and composition of exports. The numbers show that the increment to total employment generation from exports slowed down from 23.48 lakh in 2002-03 to 2.96 lakh in 2003-04 and then picked up by 25.80 lakh in 2004-05.
