Export price of cashmere sweater weakens

Being the world's largest cashmere producer and exporter, China accounts for 75 percent of the world's total cashmere output. However, this big cashmere country has been facing embarrassment; its export unit price of cashmere sweater has continued to drop from US $31 in 2001 to $28 in 2006, a drop of $3 in five year.

At present, most these products are restricted to low-end market. The brand impact of Chinese cashmere products in the international market is far behind other countries. This is a contrast to its position as a major cashmere power.

With international manufacturing restructuring and production shifting, the processing capacity of China's cashmere products has been rapidly increasing. Its annual production capacity of cashmere sweater reaches more than 40 million pieces, forming a large export scale.

Customs statistics show that in 2006 China's cashmere and cashmere product exports scored $1.57 billion, of which cashmere sweater exports were 20.87 million pieces, worth of $602 million, but average price was $28 per piece, significantly lower than historical price and domestic price.

The current high-end international cashmere market is mainly occupied by products from Italy, Britain, France and other developed countries, Chinese brands are rarely seen.

China's cashmere exports have been unable to crack high-end product market, and its price continues to drop, one of the important reasons is that a considerable number of domestic cashmere enterprises have not made enough efforts in creating brands. Besides, they face some problems such as lack of brand awareness, financial strength, designing ability and production technology. Meanwhile, they also lack of effective channels to promote their brands.
