Automotive industry is one of the rapidly developing sectors in Turkey. It employs 240.000 people, according to OSD. About 40,000 workers are involved in the 17 vehicles-manufacturing plants and another 200,000 in 900 supplier plants. Recently, it overthrew textile as the top growing industry.

Engin Maybek Specialist in Automotive sector from Uludag Exporters' Association told Fibre2fashion, qualified, motivated and entrepreneurial workforce has created peaceful working environment in the industry, inturn boosting growth. Increasing FDIs, high technology and huge export potential also add to the development.

As for textile companies that have diversified to automotive sector, he said, “This topic needs to be researched, but the textile export rises from year to year, so we can say that there is no considerable diversion from textile to automotive.”

He confirmed the textile export had surged 22 percent in January-April 2007 as compared to the same period in 2006 when it grossed US $1.7 billion.

Maybek informed, “Textile export in 2006 reached $5.6 billion and that for May 2007 stood at $562,4 million. For January-May 2007 period textile export earned $2,6 billion. By April 2007 industry scored $2.1 billion.”
