Moreover, fertigation trials in cotton have given good results with around 80-100 bolls per plant, which should be promoted as a major technology with Government support. As far as Bt cotton is concerned, though it is proven to be effective against bollworms, the danger of incidence of sucking pests has increased, demanding immediate attention by the scientists.
Another area of serious concern is the increasing cost of production fuelled mainly by growing labour costs, which needs to be solved on a war footing. Besides, labour scarcity is assuming larger proportions, especially in Tamil Nadu, and it is expected to intensify further.
This calls for greater mechanization of cotton cultivation, particularly cotton harvesting, which has seen less progress. There is much to learn from Australia on cotton cultivation, the Vice-Chancellor pointed out to the scientists.
