Bedwear Industry in Pakistan is having a tough time due to severe competition from the competitor nations, particularly Bangladesh. This fiscal year's budget of Pakistan is disappointing as it hardly favors the industry.

In an exclusive interview with Fibre2Fashion, the Chairman of Bedwear Industry, Shabir Ahmed said “The market size of Bedwear Industry in Pakistan, locally, is not that big as there are few retail outlets in Pakistan like Chenone, Ideas, Nishat. Internationally Pakistan is quite strong due to modern and very good spinning, weaving like Airjets, etc, printing and dyeing units along with the usage of imported chemicals and lot more.”

Further he said “Major exporters from Pakistan are Gul Ahmed, Alabid, Chenab, DLnash, Nina, Alkaram, Arzoo, Bismillah, Nishat, Afroze, Shappire, Kohinoor, Mohd Farooq etc and the major competing countries include Bangladesh, India, China and the New East European countries which have joined the EU.”

Talking about the problems Shabir revealed that “Presently Bedwear Industry is not doing well as the export target was US $2.3 billion but we will be able to do only $1.9 billion. The major problems started after the lifting of quotas which is a kind of price war between the competing countries and within exporters. Further, Bangladesh and other LDC countries have an edge due to not having Custom or Anti dumping duties."

He also added, "Besides, other Governments are supporting their exporters by giving a number of Incentives and concessions. However, we have received minimal benefits like that of 5 percent for Research and development on exporters.”

Appealing the Prime Minister, the Chairman has suggested few proposals that would benefit the industry.
