Bt cotton was first introduced in India with Mahyco-Monsanto Biotech Limited's transgenic technology in 2005, and the company came up with Bt 2, the two-gene (Bollgard and Bollgard II ) product last year.
Farmers in many parts of the country adopted the new technology as it helped them save huge costs on account of pesticides.
The acreage under Bt cotton crop is estimated to further expand by 30-40 percent during the ongoing kharif period as compared with 8.7 million acre covered in the last season across the country.
At a press on Thursday, Raj Ketkar, Joint Managing Director of Monsanto said, “that growth had been phenomenal during the last five years across nine cotton growing states.”
Adding further Ketkar said “about 2.2 million farmers have planted this hybrid variety across the nine cotton growing states, showing increased acceptability.”
Reflecting to the sheep and goat mortality in Adilabad and Warangal, All India Crop Biotechnology Association confessed that, there has not been a single instance of harm to an animal that grazed on Bt plant material.
The Association further explained that Bt cotton was released only after getting the approval of Genetic Engineering Approval Committee for commercial cultivation
