After the trade talks Sri Lanka does not require to specify origin of fabric for exporting duty free apparel to India. Both countries signed a MOU to this effect.

According to Manel de Silva, Director-General of the Commerce Department, apparel exporters can now source their fabric requirements from anywhere.

According to former agreement, the three million pieces of clothing needed to have Indian fabric only to gain duty free access to India.

Both countries are keen on expanding the FTA to include services. They hope to wrap up a deal on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by year's end.

Manel de Silva says India is moving towards smoother relations as much as possible, and now apparel can go through any Indian port.

Garments are one of the main foreign exchange earners for Sri Lanka.
