Australian Wool Innovation Limited announced that textile and fashion designers of the future from Italy, China and Australia are spending week learning about the qualities and properties of Australian Merino wool, as part of efforts by Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) to build relationships that will increase demand in the future.
The 2005 Wool Study Tour students are travelling through Victoria and New South Wales, following the wool pipeline from farm to fabric. The group is a mix of next generation fashion designers and textile designers.
AWI Processing Technologies Project Manager Tom Drummond said the annual tour was an ideal opportunity to convince the students of the benefits of using wool in their designs.
"These young people are likely to be the ones who, in five or ten years, are setting the trends in what fabrics are used by the best fashion designers in Europe and the US," he said.
"One of AWI's priority research areas is to build the demand for Australian Merino wool by developing new wool products, and we're helping the group understand where Australian Merino wool comes from and the latest innovations that are making fabrics softer, easier to care for and longer lasting.
"Hopefully they'll tell their peers, and be more willing to consider wool once they start working."
There are eleven students on the tour, from The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), universities from China and participants from the Biella Masters Industry graduate training program in Italy.
