Domestic raw cotton holds high value in intl market

Pakistan is one of the leading raw-cotton producing countries in the world earning the reputation of growing the best quality cotton in the world. However, the fact remains undeniable that it is also one of the largest consumers of raw cotton in the world.

Although, roller gins do exist, most of the cotton produced in Pakistanis saw ginned. Statistical reports show that in the period between January-December 2007, the country marked an export of 96,872 bales of raw cotton.

Besides, shipment of nearly 30,000 bales will be sent to Bangladesh and Far East countries. International buyers undoubtedly consider Pakistani cotton to have far superior quality compared to other producing countries. Moreover, the prices are also competitive creating a huge demand for the material in the market.

Pakistan is likely to export about 1.5 million bales of best quality cotton this year, of which only 1 million is available, since the rest has already been disbursed to Bangladesh; Far East and China.

Pakistan imported around Rs30 billion worth cotton bales in the period between January-December 2007 but it has decided to target a production of 14.14 million bales in the coming year.
