The police has arrested former ex-deputy minister of Vietnam alongwith 17 other people involved in illegal transfer of textiles quotas to the US, sources said.
Mai Van Dau, former deputy trade minister at the Trade Ministry's import-export department, has been charged with corruption charges in a scandal involving clothing exports to the US, and accused of single-handedly throwing Vietnam's textile industry into chaos last year.
He is the senior most official arrested so far in a case that involved unauthorised distribution of export quotas to the US market for local garment makers.
Others arrested include Dau's son and former trade ministry officials and garment and textile businessmen who are also to be prosecuted.
In contravention to ministry regulations, Dau transferred quotas directly to unqualified companies, the police said, leading to widespread corruption within the department.
It is said that his actions led the garment industry of the country to chaos and grinding halt.
