While the traditional weaving sector continued its shrinking spell in 2005, total weaving industry output was bolstered by the specialty segment.

Europa Index of Output (2000=100) for Jan-July (seven months) averaged 79.7, which represented just 1.8 percent year-on-year decline.

Traditional cotton weaving output averaged a 7.5 percent monthly year-on-year decline showing worst ever performance.

Worsted weaving registered an average 3.3 percent monthly decline, dropping to an indexed output of 55.7 monthly average versus the 2000 base of 100.

A 3.5 percent year-on-year decline on an average monthly production was recorded for made-up textiles.

But the redeeming feature was textile-finishing output, as measured by the Europa Index of Total Textile Finishing (2000=100) that averaged 109.5 in the corresponding period, representing a big rise of 17.9 percent monthly year-on-year basis.

Silk weaving grew 9.4 percent average year-on-year terms while woolen fabric showed 5.6 percent increase on monthly year-on-year expansion.
