Cotton hectarage for the year 2007 has exceeded its target of 4,00,000 and information on contracted crop from Cotton Ginners Association members is still dropping in.
An over all estimate on the total produce will only be assessed once damage and loss from heavy rains is taken into consideration.
Besides, cotton ginners have reported about side marketing, unavailability of chemicals and other inputs, reduced yield per unit area due to incessant rains as some of the major factors that have created problems in this year's cotton production.
Cotton has already become the country's third biggest export and in line with this, Cotton Ginners Association is aiming to reach one million hectares of cotton by the end of 2010.
In fact, to secure the rights and benefits of the ginners, the association is also going to take serious actions against illegal buying of cotton ahead of the marketing season that commences in April.
Besides, it has also cooperated with the Ministry of Agriculture to draft legislation to be proposed before the parliament for regulating activities of the cotton industry.
