“AWI is working with retailers and manufacturers across the globe to provide the reassurance and confidence that the development of alternatives to mulesing is on track,” he said.

AWI also actively supports the use pain relief.

To underpin the industry decision to phase out mulesing by 2010, AWI has fast-tracked a rigorous research and development program to develop viable alternatives.

The most promising current alternatives to surgical for mulesing are:
• Clips – encouraging trials were conducted in 2007 and remain on track
• Intradermal injection – being worked on by a commercial company which anticipates a commercially available solution by 2010.
• Breeding – an option that Merino Ram Breeders have been working towards for some time, recent research shows it can yield results faster than most people expected, however the distribution of these genes throughout the industry will take some time.

“Australian Merino wool is a great natural and sustainable fibre, however, woolgrowers must change and adapt to their customers' needs. This is the message that AWI/Woolmark consistently receives from wool apparel retailers and manufacturers.”
