According to National Bureau of statistics, cotton acreage of China marked almost 83.85 million Mu in 2007, showing a yearly increase of nearly 1.3 percent. The total output reached almost 7.6 million tons, marking a record high of 1.3 percent in comparison to 2006.

However, growth rate of textile industry decreased, total yarn output in 2007 came up to 20 million tons, demonstrated an increase of 14.7 percent year-on-year. Overall cloth production reached nearly 66 billion meters, rising 10.3 percent per year. Yet, there is a downfall of 5.3 and 3.2 percentage point, when compared to the growth rate of previous year.

Experts believe that, heavy snow fall and Spring Festival break last month, are the reasons affecting the production, transportation and marketing of cotton products.

Last month, national cotton acquisition was completed with stable prices and 90 percent of the total output was acquired.

Further reasons behind the lower growth rate are considered as lesser cotton import in February. Domestic enterprises consumed locally produced cotton as the price of imported ones were very high.

Industry insiders believe that national cotton acreage area will grow by 2.11 percent as nearly 1911 members from 13 provinces are planning to increase their production.
