After passing through a phase of uncertainty with regard to a suitable venue, the much esteemed leather goods expo Lexpo, has taken grounds today at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Salt Lake.

Residents of Kolkata eagerly look forward to visit this annually held leather expo which will extend till April 14.

The request to hold the fair at Maidan near Shaheed Minar was turned down causing great difficulty. Credit must go to Mr Subhash Chakraborty, Transport and Sports Minister, who assisted in finalizing the venue at Salt Lake.

A large number of participants were taken aback by the insufficient time given for making financial arrangements. However, despite the inconveniences caused, entrepreneurs were more than willing to take risk with the hope that the fair turns out to be a success.

Entrepreneurs from states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand will be participating in the event to make it a big hit.

The significance of this fair was abating with every passing year since a variety of leather goods are available in the city at retail stores all through out the year.

However, Government is making efforts to promote the fair since leather forms one of the core sectors for the country with exports, this year, nearing Rs13,500 crore. It is expected to reach Rs28,000 crore by 2011.
