Strong economic climate continues for big industry

Mar '08
The strong economic climate for big industry has ripened, but Statistics Sweden's flash indicator, as yet, shows no rapidly growing signs of recession. The economic situation has worsened somewhat since last autumn, although the outlook remains strong.

In most cases, the economic situation is still regarded as being good. The image is split, however, with clear variations between different industries. Companies position themselves farther forward in the expected economic cycle.

Big industries' evaluation of the economic trends have, with the exception of a few industries, worsened since last autumn. Despite this, the flash indicator still indicates a positive climate for big industry. For all industries, there are more companies that have positive evaluations than those that have negative evaluations.

In the forecast from now until the autumn, the image is split between different industries that expect clear improvements in the economic trend while others prepare themselves for significantly worsening downturns.

As regards evaluations of present status, big industries are positioning themselves farther forward in the economic cycle. "On the top" is still the most common response alternative for most industries, but the percentage is decreasing at the same time as the percentage expecting a downturn in economic trends increases.

For some industries, there is a majority of companies that indicate the latter alternative. On the other hand, fewer companies feel that they are on the way up in the economic cycle, while it is still only a few companies that position themselves on the bottom of an economic cycle.
